Three Days + One: A New Way to Get More From the Building Organizational Capability Course

Over the past few months, there’s been a shift in how the Building Organizational Capability course is delivered. The official structure has moved to a 3‑day format, and naturally many trainers have followed suit. It’s shorter, it’s easier to schedule, and it fits neatly into a working week — so I completely understand why learners gravitate toward it.
At the same time, anyone who’s been in one of my classes knows how much I value discussion, debate, and the space to explore ideas properly. Compressing everything into three days can feel a bit like trying to drink from a fire hose. You get all the content, but not always the breathing room to make sense of it in your own context.
So, after listening to feedback and watching how the new format is landing, I’ve decided to adjust my approach and offer one that gives you the best of both worlds.
The Core Course: Now Delivered in the Standard 3‑Day Format
From now on, I’ll be delivering the core Building Organizational Capability course in the same 3‑day structure used across the industry. You’ll get all the required material, all the learning outcomes, and the same certification pathway as everyone else.
If you want the streamlined version, you’ve got it.
But if you’re someone who likes to go deeper — or if you’ve ever left a course thinking, “I wish we’d had more time to unpack that” — then keep reading.
Introducing the Optional Fourth Day: Stay for Another Day
Alongside the standard 3‑day course, I’m now offering an optional fourth day for anyone who wants to stay on and dig deeper.
Think of it as a bonus day — a space where we slow down, explore the trickier parts of the model, and connect the dots between theory and your real‑world challenges. It’s not part of the official curriculum, and it’s not required. It’s simply there for people who want more.
What we cover on this extra day will be shaped by the group, but might typically include things like:
Applying CMMI practices to your own organisation
Exploring specific practice areas in more depth
Open Q&A and problem‑solving
Peer discussion and shared experience
It’s the kind of learning that only happens when you have time to breathe, reflect, and talk things through.
Who Is the Optional Day For?
This extra day tends to appeal to:
People who want more time to absorb and apply the material
Practitioners who enjoy debate and deeper exploration
Teams attending together who want to align on next steps
Anyone who wants to turn the course into a practical action plan
If that sounds like you, you’ll get a lot out of it.
Why This New Approach Works
By separating the core course from the deep‑dive day, you get flexibility without losing depth.
Three days for the full, standardised course
A fourth day if you want to stay on and go further
No pressure either way
More value for those who want it
More choice for everyone
It’s a simple shift, but it opens up the course in a way that works for different learning styles, different schedules, and different levels of experience.
How will this work in practice?
When you sign up for one of my classes, you will notice that the class is scheduled for 4 days – the 3 main class days plus the extra day. You are then completely free to attend the 4th day or not as you see fit. At the end of the third day, provided all class pre-requisites have been met, you will be marked as having completed the course and the CMMI Practitioner Exam will be open to you. You are then free to walk away or return the next day if you wish. During the 3-day course if there are areas that you think you would benefit from a deeper dive, you can add them to the day 4 agenda and we will dive into them on that extra day.
There is no extra charge for the additional day and you will find our class prices are competitive and in-line with other providers. We hope this will provide the right balance for experienced practitioners needing to take the course to refresh their knowledge and people new to the subject who would appreciate additional time to discuss and explore the model and consolidate their learning.
I’m excited about this new format because it keeps the course aligned with the global standard while still honouring what I believe makes learning genuinely valuable: time to think, time to talk, and time to make the material your own.
If you’re ready to build capability in a way that’s both structured and spacious, I’d love to see you there.
