CMMI is used around the world by a wide range of organizations in many diverse industry sectors.

Every year, the CMMI Institute creates a document, the CMMI Technical Report: Performance Results, that looks at all appraisal activity performed over a period covering the last 5 years and seeks to identify patterns and typical improvement results that have been achieved by organizations using CMMI.

The data for this report is derived from standard appraisal reporting information. Part of this information will be a set of performance goals that an organization will have set themselves before embarking on a CMMI improvement journey. By comparing the results achieved after an appraisal with those achieved prior to the improvement program, the degree to which the organization has improved (or not) in those target areas, a view can be given as to the 'typical' improvements that you might expect to achieve through CMMI Adoption.

In addition to this, the Performance Report provides some interesting usage demographics regarding the CMMI model and where it is being used.

In terms of WHERE CMMI is being used, the single biggest market by number of appraisals is China, with the USA a not very close second and India third, however in terms of the number of countries that are active users, the reach of CMMI is truly worldwide.

Now, nearly 90% of all appraisals performed worldwide are carried out by organizations with fewer than 100 FTEs and nearly 75% of appraisal relate to organizations with 50 FTEs or less.

Nonetheless, CMMI is still actively being used to continuously improve the processes of many world-class organizations with significant market presence, including:
